Talend Open Studio for MDM simplifies MDM with a flexible and open source approach to a master data projects. It provides a foundation of the functions for master data management for integration, quality and mastering of any master data.

While customer and product are still critical domains to be mastered, they are not the only domains that are valuable. Talend Open Studio for MDM is powerful enough to create a customer or product master, but flexible enough to be applied to additional domains, such as locations, employees, assets and reference data as examples.

Key Capabilities

Active data model

The Active Data Model found in Talend Open Studio for MDM provides a flexible and simple framework to build the foundation of any MDM project, the data model.

  • Open XML-based data model - Talend Open Studio for MDM allows you to model any data and is not restricted to a pre-defined data model. The Active Data Model defines entities, attributes, validations, translations and much more. The open XML based approach is naturally multi-domain.
  • Import domain templates - Talend Open Studio for MDM allows you to import a best practice domain model into the hub to get up and running quickly. The Talend Exchange community has best practice domain models available for vertical specific domains. Once imported, a domain model can be customized or extended to meet your unique requirements.
  • Basic Data validations - the XML based approach uses annotations to perform basic validation processes such as field length or type. It also extends these basic validations to add validation against enumerated types and calculated values. For instance one could validate whether a string matches a regular expression or if a date is within a range.
  • Graphical modeling tool - Talend Open Studio for MDM provides an intuitive graphic interface for quick and easy creation of unique data models. Simple menus allow you to set access rights, define foreign keys and even create a web-based interface for the data.

Domain Driven Integration

With Talend Open Studio for MDM, master data drives interactions with external systems. The solution employs a unique event manager to drive when and where data is synchronized, augmented or distributed. Community Edition packages the same functions as Talend Open Studio with  over 400 proven components and connectors to build and deploy integration jobs with any application, database or system. These jobs enable the master data hub to consume or propagate data to any application, database or system in real time or batch.

Master Data Orchestration

Master data is the owner of its lifecycle and also drives when and how it is created or distributed to other systems. The solution employs a trigger based event manager that monitors changes and initiates actions for integration or workflow as defined by the data model.

Master Data Quality

Talend Open Studio for MDM includes all the features of both Talend Open Studio and Talend Open Profiler to allow easy profiling and access of master data.

  • Data profiling - profiling enables assessment of the quality level any data as defined by a set of metrics and goals. It is typically used as a discovery tool to help identify and manage your master data model.  It provides simple or advanced statistics to text string analysis, including summary data and statistical distributions data.
  • Data augmentation - make calls to external systems or databases to augment hub data with attributes from an reliable third party data source such as hierarchy information or other reference data lookup/validation.

Stewardship and business user interface

The Talend MDM Web UI allows you to search, manage and author master data. The Ajax based interface uses dynamic services that mirror the Active Data Model. All validations found on the model instantiate themselves as validations on Web-based forms.

  • Authoring and search tool - a complete, dynamic AJAX based interface allows to search, author and modify hub data. It provides an interface for data stewardship through simple views of records or through generated composite views for greater insight on records belonging to multiple entities for example.
  • Hierarchy management - Talend MDM provides the tools to create hierarchy views of master data to ease their inspection, edition or update.
  • Historical views - Talend MDM allows to view complete historical values and structure of master data within the hub. It also provides a journal of all hub events.

Flexible and dynamic master data management

Ultimately, MDM helps organizations meet corporate objectives for increased revenue, decreased costs, risk management and regulatory compliance. For every organization, MDM will mean something different to them. Below are some common benefits that MDM provides.

  • Synchronize and align the business
Many organizations have multiple back end systems that contain partly similar information. ERP vendors push for consolidating that data in a single application but this can be long, inflexible and may not make business sense. The MDM approach is instead to synchronize those systems so that all are working on the same page.

  • Improve Analytics
Business Intelligence applications has always tried to offer “one version of the truth” and a “360 degree view” that provide very valuable insight to the analysts. Data Warehouse and ERPs have failed to provide BI with the right data and Master Data Management is probably the only way to reach those goals.

  • Increase Revenue through effective cross sale, up sale
A single view of a customer across multiple lines of business provides insight into purchasing behavior that can be mined to find opportunities for cross sale or up sell of products to a customer. This interests most organizations and especially those that have recently merged or acquired another company.

  • Identify and avoid risk
MDM offers a complete view of data aligned across departments which provides valuable cross system analysis for risk management.  For example an organization can compile a complete picture of a customer or a supplier in order to understand the risk associated with doing business (or not) with them.
Regardless of Business purpose, a successful MDM project will employ several functions in order to deliver value over time. The typical set of functions include the following:

Profile

Perform a regular quality assessment on any dataset to detect anomalies and understand data models. Provide insight through reports and visual indicators.

Integrate

Acquire any data from any source and allow the data to be synchronized and made available in batch or real time and in the right formats to the right systems and users.

Cleanse

Cleanse, standardize and augment data as well as a capability to remove duplicates or accurately identify and survive matching data across and within sources.

Model & Master

Present intuitive tools to model any data and define relationships among master data. Secure and provision data by user, group or system. Enable any MDM architectural style.

Collaborate

Enable a group of users to collaborate on, agree and publish a set of accepted master data. Supply intuitive audit tools for manual resolution of data tasks.

MDM for Product Data

The process of developing, producing, distributing and supporting products are tremendously complicated when there's no one place you can go to see the entire product catalog for the whole enterprise. Creation of a single product information hub reduces complexity and brings huge value.

MDM for Customer Data and CRM

Customer data is the lifeblood of any organization; however, it is often wrought with data quality issues and resides in disparate formats in disparate systems.  Reconciliation of this data and a single view across systems can provide huge value for an organization. These are core use cases for master data management.

MDM for ERP

Companies using ERP suites quickly realize that data quality is essential to proper system operation and the generation of business value. ERP systems with duplicate data. They are good at processing transactions, but not so good at managing master data, data quality, hierarchy management, enrichment with third-party content, data governance, matching, cleansing and duplicate resolution. MDM is used to aid with these functions and synchronize data within multiple ERPs or to other systems.

MDM for Employee Data

Human Resources deploy a wide range of systems to provide value to the organization. Further, the onboard and termination processes can be complex. Effective employee master data can help HR deploy services quicker, onboard employees more efficiently, eliminate risk associated with terminated employees, and process mergers and acquisitions more quickly.
